WHEN IS IT TIME TO UPGRADE YOUR ELECTRICAL PANEL?

Signs to watch for, common triggers and what the work involves.

Your electrical panel quietly routes power to every circuit in your home. Most of the time you never think about it — until something starts tripping, flickering or running warm. Here’s how to tell when an upgrade is worth a conversation with a licensed electrician.

WHAT YOUR PANEL ACTUALLY DOES

The panel — also called a breaker box or load center — takes the power coming into your home and divides it into individual circuits. Each circuit is protected by a breaker (or, in older homes, a fuse) that shuts power off when too much current flows. That shutoff is a safety feature: it’s there to keep wiring from overheating.

Panels don’t last forever, and the way we use electricity has changed. A panel installed decades ago wasn’t planned around EV chargers, heat pumps, induction ranges or a home office full of equipment.

SIGNS IT MAY BE TIME

  • Breakers trip often — especially when two larger appliances run at the same time.

  • Lights flicker or dim when something big switches on, like the AC or the dryer.

  • The panel feels warm, buzzes, or smells like something is burning.

  • You still have a fuse box, or an older panel that a home inspector or insurer has flagged.

  • There’s no room left for new breakers, or you rely on lots of power strips and extension cords.

  • You can see rust, corrosion or scorch marks on or around the panel.

IF IT’S HOT, BUZZING OR SMELLS BURNT

Don’t wait for a convenient time. Stop using the affected circuits if you can do so safely and call a licensed electrician right away. If you see smoke or flames, leave the house and call 911.

PLANNING A BIGGER CHANGE?

Even if your panel works fine today, a new load can push it past what it was designed for. Common triggers include:

  • Installing a Level 2 EV charger

  • Switching to a heat pump or an electric water heater

  • Adding an induction range, hot tub or workshop

  • Finishing a basement, building an addition or remodeling a kitchen

An electrician can run a load calculation to see whether your current panel and service can handle the addition — or whether a panel upgrade, a service upgrade or a subpanel makes more sense.

“The best time to ask about your panel is before you buy the EV charger — not after.”

WHAT AN UPGRADE USUALLY INVOLVES

1. A look at what you have

A licensed electrician checks your current panel, service size, wiring and anything you’re planning to add, then explains your options in plain language.

2. Permit and utility coordination

Most panel replacements need a permit and an inspection, and often a short coordination with your utility to disconnect and reconnect power. Requirements vary by location.

3. Installation day

Power is usually off for part of the day while the old panel comes out and the new one is installed, connected and labeled. Your electrician should walk you through the new panel before they leave.

WHAT AFFECTS THE COST

Every home is different, so honest pricing starts with a look at your setup. Panel size, whether your service also needs upgrading, the condition of existing wiring, where the panel is located and local permit requirements all play a part. See how we price our work.

THE SHORT VERSION

If your panel trips often, runs warm, is a fuse box or an older model, or you’re adding a major appliance — have a licensed electrician take a look.

Not sure where yours stands? Request an estimate and we’ll tell you straight whether it’s time.
